Did you know that reading to your child is one of the most powerful ways to boost his or her brain power? The simple and enjoyable act of sharing books helps your child learn pre-reading skills such as understanding the sounds letters make, developing a richer vocabulary, and building background knowledge – all important skills that help prepare your child for learning to read and entering kindergarten.
Begin the Dripping Springs Community Library’s 1,000 Books before Kindergarten early literacy program at any time! 1,000 Books is a fun, exciting, and free way to start your child on the path to success! Any child, ages birth to five years, can participate. Families who are interested in taking part in this program can ask for an introductory information packet at the front desk. Registered families then simply share and read books with their children and track the titles. Special rewards are in place at each 100 book milestone. Each 100 books earns the reader a LEAF that they add to the library’s 1,000 Books tree, plus a special READsquared video story time that is optional. Other reading rewards vary, but can include stickers, bags, small toys, and even books for special milestones. An annual “graduation” party takes place once a year to recognize those who have reached the 1,000 book goal during the past year.
